Legacy Egg Bank Models Don’t Fit Today’s Needs

An increasing number of intended parents and donor-conceived individuals are seeking more control over the nature of their relationship with egg donors. Many fertility clinics, particularly those operating internal egg banks, are unable to meet this demand due to limited donor inventories and inflexible processes that only support traditional, closed donation types.

Historically, egg donation has followed a binary path: anonymous donors or known individuals such as friends or family. This approach is no longer sufficient for a growing group of patients looking for varied and more personal connections with donors.

Growing Push for Open and Semi-Open Donation Options

The field is experiencing a shift toward transparency and choice. As donor conception becomes more openly discussed and socially accepted, intended parents are prioritizing options that allow for varying degrees of communication with their donor.

This change reflects the evolving needs of both intended parents and donor-conceived individuals, who increasingly seek meaningful connections—not just genetic material. At the same time, many donors also want to retain some level of involvement or optional contact in the future, signaling a two-sided interest in redefining the donor-recipient dynamic.

Majority of Clinics Still Offer Only Closed or ID-Release Models

Despite the shift in patient needs, many clinics remain locked into legacy frameworks that support only closed or ID-release donations. These models restrict early contact and generally delay the release of identifying information until the donor-conceived individual reaches adulthood—and only if they actively request it.

The lack of structural support within internal egg banks—including streamlined processes, inventory flexibility, and relationship management systems—limits the ability of many providers to adapt. This operational gap constrains patient choice and slows adoption of more inclusive models.

MyEggBank Expands Access Through 250+ Clinic Partnerships

To meet the growing demand, MyEggBank (MEB) has introduced a multi-tiered donor contact framework in collaboration with over 250 clinics across North America. The new structure includes:

  • Open ID: Donors and recipients connect over video and agree to exchange full identifying and contact information, either directly or for future use by the donor-conceived individual.

  • Semi-Open: A middle-ground approach where donors and recipients may meet via video call without sharing identifying details initially, allowing flexibility for future contact.

  • ID Release: Donors remain anonymous at the time of donation, but their identifying information is available to the donor-conceived individual once they reach legal age, upon request.

These models return control to both donors and recipients, offering a customizable approach that better reflects the current expectations around family building.

National Reach Enables Broader Access and Alignment

MEB sources donors from more than 20 clinics nationwide and has aligned with other egg banks to expand available options. While many organizations follow similar standards, MEB’s strategy is to create intentional partnerships that allow patients greater choice while preserving donor autonomy.

Through its collaborations and policy changes, MEB has reduced procedural barriers that once limited patient options, allowing affiliated practices to support a more dynamic and responsive donation model.
